T here’s a lesson to be learned from Night in the Woods: if you ever want to deal with big subjects such as mental health and relationships without putting people on edge, try being a cartoon cat. It’s much easier to deal with thorny subjects when people are distracted by your whiskers. It also helps that Night in the Woods is actually funny, like an Animal Crossing slacker movie made by Kevin Smith at the peak of his powers. The best moments are small and celebratory, when protagonist Mae is hanging out with her weird friends in the cosily autumnal Possum Springs. A deft commentary on life’s complexities in a disarmingly adorable package. 00 82
