Has there ever been a more exciting time to be a BMW enthusiast? In the last 12 months we’ve been treated to a new 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series and 6 Series. There’s also been a new M5 and the launch of the new M6 is imminent. Interestingly though, none of the above are the reason I’m so excited. What’s really got me animated is the fact BMW seems to really be embracing the aftermarket industry. BMW must have noticed countless enthusiasts using aftermarket parts and companies to individualise their cars yet further, because it’s just extended and rebranded its own aftermarket parts range. We take a closer look at the new BMW M Performance accessories range when we get behind the wheel of an E92 M3 with most of the goodies fitted.
It’s this same realisation by BMW that’s also influenced the launch of the new M Performance Editions of the M3 and M5. These are essentially dramatically styled versions of the latest M cars, details of both these cars can be found in the News pages (p16).
There’s also a treat for all E30 owners this month. Not only is there a tasty feature car over on p36 for you to enjoy, but we’ve also put together an interesting engine conversion guide on p28. In it, we look closely at the pros and cons, and also what’s involved in fitting numerous BMW powerplants into an E30’s engine bay. There’s a lot of food for thought here but bear in mind this is just part one of the guide. Next month, we’ll be looking into non-BMW options.
Which leads us nicely onto this month’s sublime cover car. Chris Rooney’s Honda S2000-powered 2002 has got us all hot under our collars. Thanks to its foreign engine, we are expecting this car to divide opinion, but have a read (p58) and let us know what you think. The sun is out, and we can’t think of anything else we’d like to be driving right now…
