Baldur’s Gate III has been in early access on PC for some time. Only the first act is already available, but that’s still 25-plus hours of adventuring.
The mad lads of narrative design, the team at Larian Studios, are back. Most recently known for the winding paths of 2018’s Divinity: Original Sin II, the developer is returning with a sequel to another RPG titan: over 20 years since the Biowaredeveloped Baldur’s Gate debuted, Larian holds the series’ reins for the third entry. Drawing from Dungeons & Dragons’ fifth edition ruleset, BGIII is paved with turned-based fights and skill checks. You can create your own custom hero to roll for critical success and failure, or follow the authored story of one of the Origin characters. If you don’t take on the role of an Origin character, you can recruit them to journey alongside you later. These potential companions include Astarion the fandom-favourite vampire spawn, Shadowheart the trickster domain cleric, Gale the wizard, Wyll the warlock, and Lae’zel the Githyanki fighter – though how Each character has been infected with an illithid tadpole, a parasite that could potentially turn them all into mindflayers. It’s a race against time to avert this body-snatching fate, but already your party are experiencing changes. For one thing, Asterion can walk in sunlight – that’s probably fine, right?
