St Cakes – News of Old Boys Old Cakeian Nigel Führerage (Faggs, 1972-77) has been in the news recently, with much discussion about his time at the alma mater! Fellow Cakeians have been exchanging amusing anecdotes in the national newspapers about Nigel teasing the Jewish boys by goosestepping through the cloisters and smashing the windows of their studies. One particularly amusing story involved Nigel leading the choir in chapel singing the Horst Wessel song, before heading to the library and burning all the books. One teacher, Mr Goering, fondly remembers that Nigel was the first to put his hand up in class... and at any other large assembly. Mr Goering (Head of German Studies) was himself an Old Cakeian (Nazis, 1939-45), but is of course no relation to the man appearing in the school’s recent Film Soc screening of Nuremberg, starring another old boy, Russell Maximus Decimus Meridius (Crowe’s, 30-37 AD). It’s always good to see the school talked about and it’s nice to hear Old Cakeians talking about the school without mentioning dear old Mr Gropey, who is currently on a sabbatical at His Majesty’s pleasure. We wish Mr Führerage the best of luck. He has always been a controversial figure, right back to his time here. One school report said: “Nigel is a deeply horrid boy. Reform is the only answer.” Whereas another one had a very different tone, insisting “Nigel is truly beastly and will doubtless go far (right)”.
