Foreword
The referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union has hardly had the effect David Cameron intended. It has split not just the Conservative party (see Rachel Sylvester, p20, on whether this is terminal) but the country (see Peter Kellner, p17). True, not the “Westminster elite,” nor the ranks of many leading economists (see Anatole Kaletsky, p15) nor CEOs of key businesses, who have overwhelmingly supported the “Remain” camp. But the strength of feeling in the country, about immigration and about sovereignty, does not always reach well to Westminster. It’s still there, however, hence at least one strand of polling which shows the country almost equally divided.
