Why I write…
Malika Booker is a British poet and artist. She is considered a pioneer of the spoken word movement and is writer-in-residence at charity First Story. She explores surrendering our ego in the ritual of writing
Poetry is a beautiful art form. Its power lies in the ability to transform ordinary experiences by capturing a moment or emotion. Writing poetry is a privilege and struggle, in part because we need to create in ourselves a new way of observing the world, capturing microscopic moments as ingredients for our work. We must then adhere to a writing ritual to develop trust of our unconscious and surrender our ego, so we can lose ourselves as we write.
