Current affairs brought my mother and me particularly close in the 15 years or so after my father died. She always watched the BBC Ten O’Clock News before turning in for the night – and I was in the habit of doing the same thing many miles away.
This meant that at some point the following day when I called for a chat, we had something in common to discuss. It might have been a reaction to some terrible piece of news or a comment from her about the tie worn by Huw Edwards (remember him?) or Fiona Bruce’s outfit, which she thought was inappropriate or plain ugly.
