Ever since Walt Disney first put Snow White together with her Seven Dwarfs, the House of Mouse has tended to look to Europe when conceiving its animated offerings. From the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen to British literary heavyweights like Lewis Carroll and Rudyard Kipling, the well of inspiration it has drawn from has been Euroand Anglo-centric –a tradition only partially ameliorated in recent years by the decision to let some women of colour join its overwhelmingly Caucasian panoply of princesses.
