How to apply watercolour washes

Conas, watercolour on Hanhemühle Not 140lb (300gsm), 6310in (15325.5cm).

I used a graduated textured wash for the sky. I worked wet-on-dry, with stronger tones gradually added that helped to pick out the shapes and give form to the subject. Wet-ondry will create crisp edges

No other medium looks the same as watercolour. It works by light reflecting back through the paint from the surface of the paper, a characteristic that makes it necessary to work in a fresh, uncluttered way and, counterintuitively, means that the more work we do, the worse the painting becomes as we can obliterate the very quality that attracted us to use this medium. Although watercolour is deceptively difficult, by following the simplified approach outlined here you will be able to produce competent, fresh watercolours and, crucially, find enjoyment rather than frustration in the medium.
