Few 100-year-old-plus car companies have got through a century without coming close to financial ruin once or twice. The Great Depression of the Thirties saw Bentley fail to keep up, and it was eventually bought by Rolls-Royce. In 1970 the aeroplane engine side of the RR business collapsed, and the automotive department became a separate company.
