MATURITY AND MENSTRUATION

As a transman, the obvious wish I have for my younger self is that someone had told me that not everyone who menstruates is a woman, that there exists a world outside of the binaries of the so-called gender norm, that you are not stuck with the cards you are dealt at birth. I wish I had exposure to queer people outside of the toxic portrayal by the media, that growing up I could have seen myself reflected in someone else. I also just wish that there was less emphasis on my growth and maturity when I first experienced a period. Puberty was lined up for me as the definitive point when I would give up my childish gender idiosyncrasies and conform to what society expected of me, which was the full-blown maturity of a responsible grown woman.
