TOURING America in the early 1980s, Simple Minds’ faith in their krautrock-literate brand of post-punk was occasionally tested. After an audience of barely 25 rocked up for one of their shows, the well-intentioned promoter came to commiserate with singer Jim Kerr, saying: “That’s two bands I’ve had in this week with no-one here. They were Scottish guys as well: U2. Best thing I’ve seen for ages.”
