Did you know that not all Lemsip products are vegan? I failed to spot this and am feeling rather dismayed that after 13 years of veganism my record of not consuming animal products is flawed. It made me wonder how many other things I may have accidentally consumed that contained animal products. Most of us know about wine and the fact that a lot of it is made using animal-derived fining agents. Sugar is also a problem, because bone char from cattle is widely used by the sugarcane industry as a decolourising filter, enabling the sugar to achieve a white colour (beet and coconut sugar are not processed with bone char). How many products do I consume with have sugarcane in? Is it in fizzy drinks, sweets, cakes, which I eat thinking they are vegan?
“Government should absolutely ensure full clarity for vegans, for those with religious beliefs and for those with allergies.”
