There was a massive choice of motorhomes and campervans at the recent NEC motorhome show and, while we had already seen the new models from the major players, there was a number of novelties from the van conversion specialists. Hillside, notably, launched its Heatherton – the first UK production conversion of the exciting new VW Crafter base vehicle.
It and the new Westfalia Sven Hedin were the only Crafters on show, although we expect to see plenty more over the coming 12 months.
It was good to see Mercedes-Benz taking its own stand at the show (displaying not just a Marco Polo camper but an Auto-Sleeper coachbuilt, too), while fans of the three-pointed star will also have been drawn to Rolling Homes, whose new Magellan looked like a very appealing alternative to a T6.
Bürstner told us that the German van conversion market is now 15,000 vehicles, while Fiat said that 27% of the Ducatos it supplies to the industry are now panel vans. Clearly, the van conversion sector is growing exponentially. Our prediction is that this hasn’t peaked yet!
