WHAT DO YOU BRECON?
In preparation for UTMB, our annoyingly cheerful ultrarunner Damian Hall has been sleeping in his car
TOKEN BLOKE
When you end up spending the night in the car, perhaps things have gone too far, right? My pillow was the opposite of fluffed up, I wasn’t under my favourite duvet with the green tractors on and I was sleeping on, well, a seat.
But I was happy as hell. I had the adventure-rich contours of a map to pore over for bed-time reading, lots of tasty snacks, and some tired legs to help me sleep. I suppose the strange thing was that sleeping in the car didn’t feel strange at all.
My alternative bedroom wasn’t down to marital discord (this time), rather training for this year’s A race, the 106-mile Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB). This’ll be my third UTMB in a row, so I know how ouchy it can be. (Though I also suffer from the common problem of ultrarunners’ amnesia: hurt? That race didn’t hurt, it was all AMAZING.) And I know how hard I need to train to do well.
