For the majority of my ‘running life’ (ever since I first took my tentative steps on a 0-5K programme back in 2006), heading out in Lycra and trainers has been very much a solo affair. For me, running has always been time to myself – for thinking, planning, plotting, running out sadness or anger, or just revelling in the joys of the season. And when it came to training for an event? Well, that was definitely to be done in solitude, where I could figure out my easy, tempo and race paces all on my own, without having to account for anyone else’s speed.
