Two more classics are being adapted for the screen again.
Netflix are producing a new adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca with a screenplay by Jane Goldman and direction by Ben Wheatley. The cast includes Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James and Armie Hammer. This will be the fourth time the novel has been filmed, following Hitchcock’s best picture Oscar winner and TV versions by both the BBC (1979) and ITV (1997).
Meanwhile Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions is making a new three-part adaptation of Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol for airing this Christmas on the BBC. Guy Pearce stars as Ebenezer Scrooge and Andy Serkis will play the Ghost of Christmas Past. Mathematicians have proven incapable of calculating how many screen versions of this timeless fable are now in existence.
