Europe needs greater consistency in rules around the trade in ivory, a gathering of auctioneers was set to hear on Friday, June 30, as ATG went to press.
BADA president and former MP for Kensington, Victoria Borwick, planned to tell guests at the annual dinner of auctioneer body SoFAA that the previous government ’s approach to making the sale of all post-1947 ivory illegal was to be welcomed.
However, new rules in France continue to allow the sale of ivory items made as recently as the 1970s, despite the measures being described as a ‘total’ ban.
