French privateer Ambroise Louis Garneray (1783-1857) was captured in March 1806 by the English and spent the next eight years on a Prisoner of War hulk in Portsmouth harbour.
While interned, he completed this oil on canvas, 20in x 3ft 3in (51 x 99cm), which shows a line of prison hulks lined across Portsmouth harbour pointing towards the horizon, beyond which lies the open sea and France, pictured below.
