Spur toe blacksmith iron c.1700 – £26,000 at Gorringe’s.
This hitherto unknown iron – part of select group of perhaps a dozen very early golf clubs from the late 17th or early 18th century – emerged at Gorringe’s in Lewes on June 26, writes Roland Arkell.
It had been purchased by the vendor’s grandfather in the 1950s for 10 shillings and purportedly acquired by the previous owner during a cellar clearance in Leven, Fife.
