The growing momentum behind at least some Japanese works of art – given Sotheby’s seal of approval with the announcement of its first dedicated sale in 11 years (ATG No 2357) – has been noted at a lower level in provincial rooms for some time. Pictured here are three examples of Meiji shibayama work that suggest the trend continues.
A fine folding screen offered at Hannam’s (23% buyer’s premium) at Selborne on September 5. Measuring 12 x 10½in (30 x 27cm) and decorated with various figures formed with ivory and mother of pearl, it was estimated at £3000-5000 and sold to a collector on the phone at £6500.
