This silk taffeta hat is a rare gentleman’s summer ‘undress’ cap probably made in England c.1760-70. Worked with Orientalist palmettes, acanthus scrolls, daisies in chain stitch and satin-stitched floss silk, it was deemed suitable attire for a wealthy gentleman during hot climates.
Formerly the property of an English noble family and in ‘remarkably fresh’ condition, it carries an estimate of £2500-3500 at the Passion for Fashion sale at Kerry Taylor Auctions on December 9.
