Monastic retreat

Approval was granted on Wednesday at the North Ayrshire planning meeting to build a monastic retreat complex on Holy Isle.

Since the Buddhists came to Holy Isle in 1992, it has become a place of international interest. Now with this large and imaginative plan for a monastery, in a place with so many associations with early Christianity, Holy Isle’s fame is set to increase.

It has been a long and torturous journey to gaining this permission. The Buddhists of Samye Ling first had to raise the money and then there was a much publicised architectural competition which attracted almost 200 entries. The eventual winning entry was stark and minimalist and the present plan was made public last autumn.
