For the 1924 season, Bugatti copied the Type 30’s engine into a bespoke new racer, the Type 35, which would dominate grands prix for a decade. The third major event of the 1925 season was a fine example of its prowess, as Meo Costantini beat the four-pot Peugeot Type 174 of Louis Wagner by five minutes around the “exceptionally difficult mountainous circuit” of the Targa Florio in Sicily. Over the 335.5 miles, the flying ace averaged 44.4mph, thanks to his experience there, plus the Bugatti’s lighter weight and greater power. It also helped that Peugeot’s balloon tyres proved prone to punctures.
