‘I FELT I’D FAILED AS A MUM’

NANNY KATHRYN MEWES:
TV Q&A
Kathryn, you’re now a mum yourself (to 11-month-old Harriet), how has that changed the way you work?
It’s made my job so much harder! The emotions that come with being a parent absolutely suck, and I mean that in the nicest possible way. The worry you have and the anxiety and the concern about whether you’re doing it right… I never knew all of these emotions existed! Now I meet the parents as a mum as well as a professional, and I feel their pain!
You’ve come out to say you found it difficult to bond with your daughter when she was born…
We now have a great relationship and a very strong bond, but it was definitely not easy at the beginning, in fact it was jolly, jolly hard. I can honestly say I started loving being a mum when she reached six months. I had brainwashed myself into thinking, “As soon as you’re able to put solid foods into them you’ll know what you’re doing.” And that was exactly what happened. The day I started weaning her I knew we were OK.
