TIP OF THE FORTNIGHT
Scroll through Thunderbird using volume buttons
I installed the Thunderbird app on my Android phone as soon as I read about it in Issue 696 (page 44), and linked it to my Gmail email account. I was curious to see how Thunderbird would work on a phone compared with a PC – would it incorporate any of the phone’s controls, for example? The answer is yes. It offers a clever way of scrolling through messages using your phone’s volume buttons.
Install the app from the Google Play Store (www.snipca.com/52416) then once you’ve linked your accounts, tap the three horizontal lines at the top left. Next tap the settings cog at the bottom left, then ‘General settings’ at the top. Now tap ‘Interaction’ and tick ‘Volume key navigation’ ( 1 in our screenshot).
Now when you open an email, you can press the volume controls to move to the next or previous message. I’ve also activated a setting that shows the next email automatically after I’ve deleted or moved one 2 .

Set minimum transfer times on public transport
I liked Kevin Wiffen’s tip on setting traffic-delay times in Magic Earth (Issue 698). I’ve been using it as a replacement for Google Maps on my phone since you recommended doing so in Issue 696 (page 62). I have a couple of tips for new users like me, particularly those who rely on public transport.
