Wintoys is one of our favourite free tools for optimising Windows, and is particularly useful for removing junk files and unwanted software (see page 20 for instructions). It’s been updated with a host of new features and enhancements, which give you even greater control over how your PC works.
Wintoys’ Storage cleaner can now clean the caches of different versions of browsers, including Chrome Canary, Edge Beta and Firefox Nightly, as well as Windows logs. A new Others option removes junk from built-in Windows features, such as Widgets and Remote Desktop, and Wintoys now scours more thoroughly for temporary files.
Usefully, you can now see how much free space is available on your main hard drive before you perform a clean-up, and the number and total size of files you’ve selected to delete. Wintoys also tells you how much space system restore points are consuming, and warns you that deleting them all is irreversible (“consider a backup”). The Storage cleaner was previously called Junk, but has been renamed because “not everything is junk”.
