What’s All the Fuss About...
Microsoft 365 Copilot app
No, Office hasn’t been axed, but its days might still be numbered
What is it?
Microsoft calls it an “AI-first productivity app for work and home”, but that will mean little to most people. It’s simply an app (desktop and mobile) that makes it easier to use Microsoft’s AI Copilot tools when working in Office tools, such as Excel and Word. However, in early January it was widely reported online that the app was replacing Office entirely.
Were the reports accurate?
No, they were completely wrong. But we understood why people were confused, and Microsoft’s habit of using a million different names for products was partly to blame. Visit Microsoft’s page for the free online versions of Office apps (www.snipca.com/57693) and you’ll see ‘Get free access to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint using Microsoft 365 for the web (formerly Office)’ – see screenshot below. This gives the impression that Microsoft 365 had already replaced Office.
