Hullo! A friend of mine was in Japan recently and while drooling over their holiday photos I was reminded of my own trip to Japan (which I just worked out was over 10 years ago, but I’m refusing to acknowledge how much time has passed!). One of the most beautiful sights is the short-lived blooming of the sakura – these blossoms reach peak flower after about a week and then start to fall away.
While the blooming of the cherry blossoms signifies the beginning of spring, it’s also seen as are minder of the transient nature of life. Change is the one constant we can rely on and while humans are very good at adaptation, we also tend to dig our heels in when it comes to embracing it. A level of predictability feels supportive and safe, but holding firm to a single moment in time or a singular thought on how things are supposed to be can lead us to become rigid, anxious, or overwhelmed. Being comfortable with change is a muscle that needs consistent working –we need to practice being adaptable and accepting, especially during challenging times that are out of our control.
