Letter from the Editor

They say a week is a long time in politics and in the week before we went to press we learned that LGBT domestic violence charity Broken Rainbow has had its helpline saved thanks to renewed government funding until 2017. Respect to the Liberal Democrat peer Baroness Hussein-Ece who raised the organisation’s plight in the House of Lords. That’s the kind of proactive work we love at DIVA. Jack Monroe (p26) and Juno Roche(p42) are two more different kinds of of activists who are doing what they can to make the world a safer, more inclusive place. Our cover star Channel 4’s Anna Richardson isn’t afraid of rattling a few cages either, as we learned on her Supershoppers show, watching her getting behind seductive branding and exposing the real deal. Oh, and she happens to be partners with “national treasure” Sue Perkins (p64). Many of us were disappointed when Carol didn’t win a Golden Globe, a Bafta or an Oscar, so Carrie Lyell has written a fool-proof guide to getting big gongs that lesbian film-makers would do well to follow (p18). On a more serious note, many of you got in touch to tell us how concerned you were when lesbian Gayle Newland was jailed for eight years by a judge who’s given lesser sentences to paedophiles. We asked legal expert Deborah Mallon to explain how this could happen and her fi ndings are fascinating (p52). Finally, if you’re going to the BFI Flare festival, we’ll be selling subscriptions when we’re not watching movies, so we hope to see some of you there!
