Transition and movie-making are both more complicated than they need to be in this baggy film about personal growth. When James (Del Herbert-Jane) comes out to daughter Billie (Tilda Cobham-Hervey) as a transgender man, he tells her that apart from brief weekly visits, she must live with her other parent for a year. Never properly explained, this decision reflects the film’s mysteriously negative take on trans* issues; with James as a parent, the theatrically gamine Billie rapidly goes o— the rails. A subplot about her own voyeuristic investigation into sexuality and gender is interesting but equally joyless.
