Wild things
Author Laura Kay talks queer communes, sapphic sex scenes and making it big in America
BY ROXY BOURDILLON
Queer romcom queen Laura Kay has a brand new novel out and I can confirm it’s gorgeous. The DIVA Award nominee’s back catalogue includes The Split and Tell Me Everything (both essential reading for any self-respecting lez/bi bookworm) but Wild Things might just be her best work yet. Escapist, relatable and ever so sapphic, it’s the perfect summer read. When I catch up with Laura over Zoom, she’s at her girlfriend’s house looking fresh-faced and cheerful, sipping out of an enormous mug emblazoned with the words, “Girls Support Girls”. There’s a boisterous dog bounding in and out of shot, someone’s knocking on the door. It is, as Laura describes it, “an actual madhouse”, but a fun-filled one; the perfect backdrop for us to dig into her hilarious, heartwarming new WLW romance.
