Have the marriage laws killed lesbian subculture?” I’m by the fire at my friend’s 50th birthday party, and the old lezza gang – which I’ve assimilated myself into though I’m only 26 – is lamenting the lost days of lesbian clubbing. The days when girls-only parties were rammed with political fervour as much as sexual tension.

“When I was first in London 20 years ago there was a lesbian night you could go to any night of the week. It was roadblock – packed every night,” says Heidi, now a 40-something gardener.

As clubs in London, Berlin, New York and Sydney have morphed over the last three decades, why are the women being left out, again? London’s 80s, 90s and 00s nightlife had places like Vixens at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern for the butch dykes, sex-positive events like Chain Reaction and Clit Club, underground black women’s raves and shebeens like the Sistermatic parties in Brixton, and even sevenday women’s bars like the Glass Bar in Euston and Southopia in Elephant and Castle. There was somewhere for (almost) everyone to come out and find their identity.
