Just months after the broadcast of Victory of the Daleks, the editor of Doctor Who: The Brilliant Book 2011 suggested to showrunner Steven Moffat that the New Paradigm design introduced in that story had “split opinion” among fans. “We’re not going to lose the old [ bronze] Daleks,” replied Moffat. “We’ll just use them all at once, and have different ranks. All I’ve done is give the Daleks an officer class.”
And he was true to his word. The pre-title sequence of Asylum of the Daleks reveals what Moffat’s script described as “an amphitheatre of Daleks, the most we’ve ever seen at one time”. On screen, this parliament includes thousands of bronze-coloured Daleks and, among them, several of the New Paradigm red drones, a blue Strategist and a single white Supreme.
