Director: Darrol Blake Producer: Graham Williams Broadcast: 28 October – 18 November 1978
On receiving the scripts for the 100th Doctor Who serial, director Darrol Blake knew immediately the location he wanted for the story’s stone circle. Many years earlier he’d visited the ancient site of the Rollright Stones, standing on the border of Oxfordshire and Warwickshire. Despite being a considerable distance from the village required by David Fisher’s script, the site had an appropriately liminal atmosphere. Blake was also impressed by its considerable topographical appeal – it was elevated in the landscape, allowing good sight-lines, and bordered by a small copse, permitting a variety of backgrounds in the centre of the monument.
