Emma’s heart is still devoted to miniatures

Emma Waddell builds and designs beautiful houses. We chat with her about TV shows, a misplaced Versace ring, and a passion for miniatures that has lasted since childhood BY CHARLOTTE MERRIMAN

Hi Emma.You’ve had a whirlwind year with your commissions and the Best in Miniature TV show, but how did you first discover miniatures? I was 10 when my family saved up for a doll’s house. It was handmade, resembled a Swiss chalet, and was sixteenth scale as they all were back then. It was my favourite toy and I lost myself in it everyday. We lived in North London at the time and it wasn’t long before I stumbled into Kristin Baybars’ magical shop in Gospel Oak. To say I was hooked for life is an understatement.

How did you get into the building and designing of houses? It was a bit of an accident really. I worked briefly in a doll’s house shop and noticed customers kept asking for ready-built and decorated houses rather than just kits. Or if they bought the kit they wanted someone to make it for them? At the time there was no one who we knew that offered that service. I had an idea…
