Susan’s tiny ceramics — a dreamlike whisper

Susan Van Tubbergen showcases some of her most amazing miniature works of art and shares her journey into miniature pottery. Sit back and marvel at her skill BY JOAN MCKENZIE

s usan Van Tubbergen was raised in a family of ar tists, and as a result she was always fascinated by the possibility of creating something in Lilliputian size and scale. Today, if you are for tunate enough to attend a miniature show where she has her exquisite creations on display, you may feast your eyes, and actually touch the tiniest of her vases – some of which are only capable of holding one miniature flower.

Using both hands, her tiny vase will feel as light as a feather. Her chosen colours affect and enchant each miniaturist in their own way. Once you see these and feel them in your own hands, these diminutive vases are more like a lovely dreamlike whisper of physical actuality, as you imagine adding them to your own doll’s house. This minimalist manifestation of such great beauty represents the 10,000 plus hours of training that Susan devotedly underwent, experiencing trial and error, finalising to perfection, and recognised by her awarded proficiency.
