On our adventures around Pharloom, we spot one gatherer-type bug with something unexpected in its clutches: a distressed flea. They function much like the first game’s grubs, although instead of being trapped in jars, “these fleas have gotten themselves into various scrapes – they’re more complicated than the grubs, in that they’ve got various different ways of being in trouble.” Once we’ve rescued the puppyish little creature, it leaps away, home to its caravan of fellow fleas. “It travels around the world and expands,” Gibson says, “so it’s a real troupe. And it’s almost like – I probably hadn’t really put it together until now – but it really does act like a travelling town, like a Dirtmouth that’s on wheels. So yeah, you’ll see them at different places throughout your journey, and obviously, the town will evolve as it gets more flea companions.”
