A puzzle game about tidying up, created by a real-life couple, featuring recreations of items from their actual home – might we be witnessing the birth of videogames’ most specific genre? A Little To The Left isn’t really anything like Unpacking, though, instead presenting you with a handful of items arranged on a flat plane. Your job is to figure out how they should be sorted. Smallest to largest? Colour-coded? By lining up their grooves and indents? What seem like trivial tasks open up as the game introduces multiple possible solutions to each puzzle, encouraging you to reconsider your first thought and spot another pattern, and then another. And this is before the game introduces a miniboss: Rookie the cat, whose paws add a degree of twitch reflex to proceedings. Beyond those initial impressions, then, there’s plenty more here to unpack.
