The UK is home to hundreds of family history societies and specialist groups, with thousands more societies based overseas. So, what is a family history society and why should you consider joining one?

Family history societies began to grow in popularity in the 1980s, when tracing your ancestors and creating a family tree began to become a mainstream pastime. The majority of these societies carry the name of the town, city or region which they cover, and most members will be searching for ancestors who lived or worked in that place.
