The War Memorials Register at the Imperial War Museum (IWM) reached a landmark in March 2018, releasing to the public more than one million names from 75,000 memorials and 30,000 war memorial images, all in searchable online format.

The origins of the Register lie in the passion of Doctor Alan Borg, Director General of the IWM (1982-1995), who, determined to write a book on the subject of war memorials, found his research impeded because at the time there was no central record of memorials, including their design and building. He therefore set up the National Inventory of War Memorials in 1989, going on to publish what has become the standard book – War Memorials – in 1991.
