With barbecue season in full swing, it’s common to munch while standing up and chatting. But according to a new study, finding a seat may help you enjoy your food more. Participants who were given crisps and brownies rated them as better tasting when they sat down to eat them rather than nibbling standing up. The researchers suggest this may be because standing puts greater physical stress on the body, which in turn reduces the sensitivity of our senses, including taste. They also found that participants ate more, however, when sitting down, which seems to contradict advice that sitting down makes us more aware of what we’re eating (and in turn can help us eat less). Whether you choose to stand or sit, we suggest the most important thing is to remain mindful of everything you eat.
