As part of the traditional May Day celebrations in Dunster, Somerset, a local resident would dress up as a brightly-coloured hobby horse and be led through the town. The origins of this particular custom are unknown, though we know a bit more about May Day itself, which has been observed for centuries across Europe as a celebration of fertility, spring and the arrival of summer. May Day may even have its origins in the Celtic summer festival of Beltane.
