Following a decade of service to the nation, Major Mercury, a royal drum horse, has passed away. Mercury was a much-loved part of the Household Cavalry, serving every year at the Trooping of the Colour –a celebration that involves 1,400 troops to mark the Queen’s birthday. To commemorate his impressive dedication to crown and country, Mercury has been laid to rest at his birthplace, Dyfed Shire Horse Farm in Pembrokeshire, where an oak tree has been planted in his honour. The tree is in conjunction with the Queen’s Green Canopy scheme, too, which encourages the public to plant a tree to mark her 70-year reign.
