MOVING AROUND WITH MAGNETS
Did you know?
The first magnetic stirrer was patented by Richard Stringham
Long gone are the days of manually stirring for hours, all thanks to the invention of the magnetic stirrer. As the name suggests, the device uses the opposing magnetic fields of two magnets, one placed in the beaker and the other built into the stirrer itself. When a current is passed through the internal electromagnet, it creates a rotating magnetic field. The magnet placed in the beaker, typically bar-shaped, interacts with the rotating field, causing it to spin. The more power put through the electromagnet, the greater the magnetic field and the faster the magnet spins.
