SO ELECTION year has arrived, at last! And if that exclamation mark is failing to draw the appropriate excited reaction, I’ll forgive you - it’s probably because five out of the last seven years (and indeed eight out of the last eleven) were “election year” in one sense or another. But for the Yes movement, this really could be the big one. It’s true that the SNP are exasperating their own supporters by seeking a repeat of an indyref mandate they already possess and are allowing to expire, but I suspect it’s too cynical to imagine that history will repeat itself. If the pro-indy camp win a majority of seats, and especially if the SNP win an outright majority of seats in their own right, the pressure on them to act this time will be immense. Perhaps even irresistible.
