5 of the best Venetian islands

Venetian islands words by Keira Pettengale

1 A vibrant, picturesque island which, in the 16th century, began to flourish through the rise of its lace-making traditions, Burano is truly captivating for its colourful fishermen’s houses that adorn its canals, and famous for its culinary dishes produced with goby fish. Burano even has its own leaning tower, the bell tower of the Church of San Martino. Legend states that the houses here were brightly painted to aid local fisherman returning home in the fog.

2 Home to an atmospheric cemetery, San Michele is a place of culture and history. The tombs of notables such as Sergei Diaghilev, Igor Stravinsky and Ezra Pound lie here. The cemetery was established in 1804, after Napoleon deemed the practice of burying bodies beneath the city to be unhygienic.
