If you lack the state-of-theart equipment needed for early sowing, don’t despair. Make these clever clear shelves and you’ll soon be tearing open those seed packets, says Joyce Russell
Pictures: Ben Russell

It can be hard to raise early plants from seed if you don’t have a greenhouse and it can be hard to raise tender plants in a cold greenhouse without any added heat. Some people work wonders with sunny window ledges and others buy in whatever small plants are available as they are needed. But all plants do best with good all-round light and small plants need some protection until hardened off enough to go outside. A simple answer is to make these lovely propagation shelves.

They can be sized to fit any space that you want and they offer extra protection against rain and cold. You can fit a heated mat in the base if you want some extra warmth, but in most sunny conditions they will heat up well. Cover with an extra layer on cold nights and you will have the perfect system for raising healthy and resilient small plants.
