■ Sow rows of salad leaves. It’s hard to have too many to pick, and growth slows down in the winter months. Rocket, frilly mustard, mizuna, purslane and lamb’s lettuce are all favourites.

■ Put small plants of cabbage, spinach etc. in the ground as soon as you can. Buy a few in if you haven’t sown them. Try sowing early carrots in a large pot.

Top tip

Reduce feed or stop feeding altogether from this month on. If tomatoes and peppers are still swelling fruit, then feed every two weeks until October. If trusses are all set and just ripening fruit, then there’s no need for extra nutrients.
