Knitting  |  November 2018
Autumn has arrived – and with it, knitting season. This month it’s all about cocooning: shutting out the world and hunkering down with your craft. We’ve brought together some beautifully comforting designs, from Bronagh Miskelly’s stunning cabled sweater dress Isla to Jo Allport’s casual Jyna top in Wendy’s cool cotton blend Purity and Natalie Smart’s gorgeous Ember, knitted in a natural shade of British Bluefaced Leicester wool from West Yorkshire Spinners. Plus an original design by Lauren Aston – if you’re into extreme knitting you’ll be able to whip up her lovely woven-effect blanket Weave Found Love in no time, and it will keep you warm for many winters to come. We’ve also got some great features to read as well as our selection of knits. Have you ever noticed how few black faces we see in media and social media representations of knitters? A group of crafty Instagrammers is setting out to change all that, and our regular contributor Jeanette Sloan writes all about it on page 12. On page 16, Gill Guest looks at how spies have used knitting to transmit coded messages – and how you can encode secrets into your own projects. Anyone worried about coping with seasonal affective disorder as days grow darker this season should turn to page 14, where Rosemary Davidson, co-author of new book Craftfulness, shares how knitting helps her in an ongoing struggle with manic depression. All in all, it’s a bumper autumn issue – so stop everything and start cocooning!
